Page Allen: Real Magic December 17th, 2010 though January 22nd, 2011 Opening Reception: Friday, December 17th, 5 to 7 pm Page Allen: Real Magic opens December 17th at The Owings Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Allen, an accomplished and nationally recognized Santa Fe artist, has exhibited her work at The Owings Gallery for over twenty-five years. On display through January 22nd, the exhibition features oil paintings, watercolors and monotypes, reflecting the magic found in everyday landscapes and objects. Discussing the inspiration for the exhibition, Allen recently stated: “I encounter the magic in my daily life, and I pay homage to it in the studio. The things, the times of day and year, the creatures that come around here: let them be as they appear and their magic may appear. Within the painting, there’s the sense that each separate life reaches out to a vast living mystery and then back into its own miraculous self. There is some alchemy between my hand and the subject, like Monet’s great Nympheas, which are simply an accumulation of brushstrokes and intoxicating color, yet evoke all elements in their interpenetration of light and darkness. They are simple, even awkward, and yet sublime. The world I live in hands me the subject of my work. There is a kind of innocence and also gravity in the way that I paint now. An abundance and generosity too, as Anne Truitt once said to me. I learn to have faith in my natural earnestness and wonder. There hides the real magic.” A full color exhibition catalogue available accompanies the exhibition from the gallery.
